5 English Explanation
5 Box, ‘Feather Poem’, Makie, Kinma (1980)
The sides and lid top feature silver ground
with makie lacquer work, depicting a pheasant's tail feathers as a motif through makie, raden, and Kinma.
The repeating pattern spreading horizontally creates a light rhythm, fitting the theme “Poem of Feathers.” Incidentally, this title was chosen after the artist consulted Masami Isoi. Within the confined form of a box, the division between silver and black surfaces expands the possibilities of design.
The previous year, at the 22nd Japan Craft Association Shikoku Branch Exhibition, his “Feather Pattern Makie Small Box,” exhibited for the first time, won the Japan Craft Association Award.
This work marks the period when he began to emerge as a promising lacquer artist.
