53 English Explanation
53. Box, ‘Yamawarau (Mountain Brightly Covered with Flesh Verdure)’, Kinma (2011)
“Yamawarau” is a spring seasonal word, depicting the appearance of mountains in early spring as trees gradually take on a fresh, vibrant glow, illuminated and enlivened by the spring sun. The box is carved in a radiating pattern to cover its surface. Then, to create a transition from deep green to bright yellow-green, lacquer and silver powder are layered and filled in about 35 times, finally polished to reveal the design.
This piece is the final work in a series following the red-based “Box, ‘Kurenai (Crimson)’, Kinma” (No.41) and and the yellow “Box, ‘Shine’, Kinma (2009)” (No.48). It is also the first in a series depicting seasonal mountains, continuing with the summer mountain-themed “Box, ‘Yamashitataru (Summer Mountain with Fresh Green Foliage)’, Kinma ” (No.59) and the “Box, ‘Yamayosoou (Autumn Foliage)’, Kinma” (No. 68) depicting autumn mountains.
