2 English Explanation
2 Box with Clear Sea Design, ‘Haruka (In the Distance)’ (1978)
This work, like the “Water Jar with Clear Sea Design, ‘Haruka (In the Distance)’ , Kanshitsu, Kinma” (No. 1) released the previous year in 1977, also takes the Seto Inland Sea as its motif. The box, finished with silver ground on three sides using makie, features a unique geometric pattern rhythmically arranged based on the ancient Japanese wave pattern “seigaiha.” Gradations are applied to the curves creating a pleasant sense of rhythm using dot-carved Kinma.
The curves, creating a pleasant sense of rhythm,
feature gradations achieved through dot-carved Kinma,
seemingly symbolizing the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea. Decorations of blue shell and gold powder are effectively placed, symbolically representing the light-reflecting sea surface in an intriguing manner. The sides, contrasting with the silver ground and based on black, skillfully express the seascape of day and night.
