27 English Explanation
27. Covered Food Box, ‘Sound of Water’, Makie, Kinma (1994)
The central red camellia is rendered in soft lacquer tones, with partial red accents added to the surrounding water ripples. This depicts the reflection of camellia blossoms still on the tree, mirrored on the water's surface. The matte lacquer finish on the camellia blossom employs a technique passed down directly from Taguchi Yoshikuni: applying vermilion pigment and allowing the lacquer to absorb it.
Through a process of filling with over forty shades ranging from gray to white, the ripples spreading across the water's surface as the camellia falls are expressed as if they were the resonance of sound. The camellia is rendered in makie, while the water ripples are depicted using Kinma, creating a masterpiece that masterfully unifies these two techniques.
