1 English Explanation
1 Water Jar with Clear Sea Design, ‘Haruka (In the Distance)’ , Kanshitsu, Kinma (1977)
The base is made of dry lacquer, with the entire sides finished in silver ground using makie.
Geometric patterns inspired by the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea are rendered in Kinma.
Created during the artist's period living in Tokyo and studying under Yoshikuni Taguchi after learning Kinma under Masami Isoi, this work was exhibited at the Tokyo branch exhibition of the Japan Crafts Association. It won the Encouragement Award, making a striking impression as a newcomer. A highly ambitious early work, it masterfully fuses the konjaku and maki-e techniques learned from both masters.
