19 English Explanation
19. Paperboard Box, ‘Haruka (In the Distance)’, Kinma (1989)
The wind patterns on sand dunes stretching far into the distance are expressed by Kinma. The wind patterns were created by applying silver powder to white lacquer as a top coat, then filling the patterns with colored lacquer in shades ranging from pale to deep over approximately 25 layers, followed by polishing. Accents are added by incorporating pale yellowish-brown tones in some areas.
This work received the Asahi Shimbun Award at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. In the selection commentary, the artist's teacher, Masami Isoi, remarked: “There are those who journey through the desert. Torn between the overwhelming hardship and the desire to turn back or press on, they struggle. Yet, in the distant horizon, something lies. Seeking hope and romance, they walk on. The artist's state of mind must be that of continuing the journey, knowing there is no choice but to advance. It is a work of substance and excellence.” The piece also received high praise for its thematic depth.
