Collection Exhibition 1st term 2025

PERMANENT

April 5(Sat.),2025-June 29(Sun.),2025

Gallery 1:Welcome to Takamatsu Art Museum!! — Focusing on New Acquisitions from 2023-24

Takamatsu Art Museum systematically collects artworks based on three pillars: "Post-War Japanese Contemporary Art," "Art in the 20th Century and Beyond in the World (Print)," and "Arts and Crafts of Kagawa (Lacquerware/Metalwork)," currently holding over 1,700 pieces. This exhibition, timed with the Setouchi Triennale 2025, introduces works related to the Setouchi Triennale and new acquisitions from 2023-24 from our "Post-War Japanese Contemporary Art" collection—considered among Japan's finest in both quality and quantity—while exploring the diverse appeal of contemporary art.

Ogawa Shinji's 《The Swing》 (newly acquired in 2024) was painted without the figures of the famous Rococo-era painting of the same title while meticulously recreating everything else, showcasing Ogawa's astonishing descriptive skills. Nakanishi Natsuyuki's sketch 《Drawings for Painting to May》(new acquisition) is presented alongside his oil painting 《Painting to May VI》, allowing for a deeper understanding of Nakanishi's intentions and expressions.

Additionally, please enjoy Katayama Mari's series 《bystander》, created during her stay on Naoshima Island for the Setouchi Triennale 2016, Konoike Tomoko's conceptual model of Escape Route, which is part of Ringwanderung, a path carved through the northern mountain of Oshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, and the special exhibit of Konoike Tomoko's 《Puppets》 (2023, artist's collection), along with other artworks from the island festival.

We hope that through [16] artists and [25] works, you will experience the diverse expressions of "Post-War Japanese Contemporary Art" as well as the history and breadth of the Takamatsu Art Museum collection.

Gallery 2:Arts and Crafts of Kagawa — Focusing on New Acquisitions from 2024

With "Arts and Crafts of Kagawa (Lacquerware/Metalwork)" as one of the three pillars of Takamatsu Art Museum's collection policy, we have amassed over 600 works centered on Sanuki lacquerware and modern metalwork. In 2024, we acquired new pieces by leading Sanuki lacquerware artists including Otomaru Kodo, Akashi Bokkei, and Isoi Masami. This exhibition introduces works by [number] artists, including 13 new acquisitions.
The exhibition features diverse works ranging from important pieces in the artists' careers to lesser-known masterpieces: Otomaru Kodo's "Cosmetic Box with Cobra Lily Urashima, Choshitsu," which depicts Urashima grass (commonly found in Shikoku) in monochromatic carved lacquer; Akashi Bokkei's masterpiece "Loneliness in Woods," portraying two leafless trees with a bird of prey perched on a branch; Isoi Masami's early works "Tray with Wave Design, Kinma" and "Tray, Colored Lacquer, Kisei"; a series inspired by Vietnam's Haron Bay including " Lacquer panel with Design of the View of Haron Bay, Kinma " as well as previously unexhibited works such as Akashi Bokkei's "Small Folding Screen with Iris Design" and Isoi Masami's " 'It is now or never,' Buddhist Alter Equipment, Kinma."
Please enjoy the Takamatsu Art Museum's "Arts and Crafts of Kagawa (Lacquerware/Metalwork)" collection, which has been further enriched with these 13 new acquisitions through purchases, donations, and loans.
