  About TAKAMATSU ART MUSEUM

TAKAMATSU ART MUSEUM Overview

Takamatsu Art Museum reopened its doors in the spring of 2016 after approximately one year of renovation. The Museum is conveniently located adjacent to the main shopping district. It is an art spot where the modern style meets a relaxing atmosphere, and also a "plaza" where citizens can freely come and go.

There are over 1,600 works, which have been systematically collected in this museum mainly under the following themes: "Post-War Contemporary Japanese Art," "Art in the 20th Century and Beyond in the World," and "Arts (and Crafts) of Kagawa". Our contemporary art collection has been highly evaluated both at home and abroad; it is considered one of the best in Japan in terms of quality and volume. It has developed into a cultural platform (* 1) in the Creative City Takamatsu, where exciting international art festivals and events, such as the Setouchi Triennale, are held. It can be said that it is a living art archive (* 2) that we take great pride in.

Takamatsu Art Museum has actively introduced a diverse collection of art and new initiatives. Looking back, it also has a rich history. Shortly after the World War II in 1949 (Showa 24), our museum opened on the premises of Ritsurin Garden, a Place of Scenic Beauty, as a forerunner of a regional public art museum in Japan. It was relocated to the new building in the current city center in 1988 (Showa 63) when the Great Seto Bridge opened. And, in 2016, the museum was reborn once again. Together with the citizens, it will continue to grow with the times while cherishing our predecessors' love for arts and culture.
