HOTCH POTCH: Illustrations and Works of Ryuji Fujieda

　
Ryuji Fujieda (1943–) has led a career of more than half a century as an illustrator and art director, and continues to work with energetically to this day. His work encompasses picture books, magazines, book design, advertising, and television art direction. In 1996, the puppet program HOTCH POTCH STATION, for which he served as art director, began airing on NHK Educational TV (now ETV). Its warm, pop-inspired visual style resonated with viewers of all ages, leading to a series of popular follow-up programs, including “You Gotta Quintet”, “Hook Book Row”, and “What is this (korenande Shokai)”?

Since 1987, Fujieda has also held more than thirty solo exhibitions at HB Gallery in Tokyo almost every year, presenting new illustrations on an ongoing basis. The world of Ryuji Fujieda continues to expand.

This exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective of his work, featuring more than 500 pieces. It consists of introducing illustrations such as picture books, book designs and works for his solo exhibitions, alongside art directions for puppet programs, television productions, and advertising. We invite you to immerse yourself in the lively, “hotch potch” world of Ryuji Fujieda, where you may almost hear cheerful melodies emerging from the artworks themselves.
