Shuntaro Tanikawa: EHon Hyakka-ten

Shuntaro Tanikawa: EHon Hyakka-ten

From the 1960s to the present, poet Shuntaro Tanikawa (1931-) has created over 200 ehon (picture books) in collaboration with various artists and photographers. Tanikawa’s challenge to express his thoughts through images and words continues to this day, covering a wide range of themes, from wordplay, clues to recognizing the state of the world, the joy of nonsense, the fun, hardness, and nobleness of life, and even death and war.

The common attribute in these richly varied picture books is Tanikawa's hopeful gaze toward his readers. This exhibition presents about twenty of his picture books and introduces them in collaboration with various creators, utilizing original paintings of the picture books, video works with moving images and words, recitations, sound effects, giant picture scrolls, and newly created installation works. It is an entertaining exhibition that has sprung out from the world of picture books and can be enjoyed by all ages.
