“World of M.C.Escher”

SPECIAL

April 23(Sat)-May 29(Sun),2016

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a genius printmaker produced by 20th Century Netherlands, and is a familiar figure even in Japan as an artist who worked in “trompe-l’oeil” (trick pictures). Based on the theme of an abstract concept of “changes in appearance, circulation, infinity, and rivalry between two dimensions and three dimensions”, Escher left behind a great number of works with a unique style of painting, and even now he is highly regarded as a leading Dutch artist.
This exhibition gives a comprehensive introduction to the appeal of Escher by carefully selecting approximately 110 prints and 30 materials from the precious Escher collection owned by the Netherlands’ M.C. Escher Foundation. In addition, we are also displaying works by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, a leading artist in 20th Century Dutch graphics and Escher’s teacher. There is no doubt that through Mesquita’s works you will be able to see the origins of Escher’s art.
This exhibition is the ideal opportunity to gain an understanding not only of the “trompe-l’oeil” (trick pictures) that made Escher internationally famous, but also the various challenges to expression that he faced along the way.
