PERMANENT

Gallery 1: Memories in Flux

As time passes, people inevitably lose many of their memories. It can be heartbreaking when cherished moments fade, but new stories may also emerge as multiple memories gently intertwine and overlap.

FUJI Hiroshi’s dinosaur-themed work, Toys Saurus 1480R17, is made from toys once played with by children. While retaining the lingering impressions of their former owners, these toys have been reborn as an entirely new creature. Andy WARHOL’s Campbell’s Soup II draws on the Campbell’s Soup cans familiar to many Americans, and that he himself ate since childhood. Elements of American culture also appear in OKAMOTO Shinjiro’s work, reflecting the artist’s childhood memories of early Showa-era Japan, a period deeply influenced by American culture. NANJO Yoshitaka and IDA Shoichi explore memories passed down through generations by the people and nature found in specific places. TAKEMURA Kei has created a piece that seems to gently cradle together the memories of others, while KITAYAMA Yoshio incorporates the theme of memory into the title of a unique three-dimensional piece made from bamboo, paper, and wood.

This exhibition presents eight works by these seven artists, each illuminating the theme of memory from a distinct perspective.

Gallery 2: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of ISO Masami’s Birth: Blooming, Luring Butterflies

ISOI Masami was born in Takamatsu City as the third son of lacquer artist ISOI Joshin, and grew up watching his father work firsthand. During World War II, he enlisted as a naval aviation cadet, and, after demobilization, reportedly decided to pursue the path of lacquer art at the age of 19. Without studying under a specific master, he absorbed the techniques of his father and senior apprentices while creating works alongside them. Masami subsequently deepened his independent research into lacquer art, utilizing techniques such as “Ofuku-bori (round-trip carving)” and “Suiage (suction-lifting)” to produce a wide variety of works. In 1985, all of his achievements were recognized with his designation as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Kinma (Living National Treasure).

While many of Masami’s works feature familiar scenes or majestic landscapes, beautiful flowers are also an important motif. In the Manyo Plants Series, which he began in 1989, he used plants grown in his own garden as subjects. “By growing them myself, observing them, and sketching them, I come to understand the true nature of the plants,” he explained. Furthermore, in Box with Gromwell Design, Kinma, butterflies dance, lured by the nectar of flowers; yet humans are equally drawn to sweet scents. In Box with Design of Plums in Plum Liqueur, Kinma, wine glasses are depicted as if offering plum wine, revealing Masami’s playful spirit.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of ISOI Masami’s birth, this exhibition presents 24 works from the museum’s collection featuring flowers and plants as motifs.
