Gallery 1 : “Changing the Point of View” Curated by Middle School Students

This year, the 30th since its foundation, Takamatsu Art Museum has held several exhibitions designed to take a look back over memorial events and our three decades of history. To round the series out, the present exhibit turns its attention to the future.
In July, we implemented a system of curators of junior-high school age. Six of them attended lectures and meetings devoted to the museum and the works in its collection to plan the exhibit. In their discussions, they came up with various ideas like an exhibition anyone can enjoy, an exhibit providing chances to relax and encounter art works in a leisurely way, and the surprising desire to examine art works while seated in a kotatsu (a traditional quilt-covered heater table, which warms only the lower part of the body ). Two of the works the young curators said they would like to examine seated in a kotatsu were “Milky Lake” by Yoshitomo Nara and “Continue” by Chieko Oshie. We urge you to see how such art works look to a person seated in one of the kotatsu.
The young curators also got to learn to enjoy analyzing messages artists have attached to their work. “Genealogy of Monsters” by Tatsuo Ikeda and “Trauma/Alltag” by Chiharu Shiota are two works on exhibit that the youthful curators want to be seen from various viewpoints.
The future rests on the shoulders of young people like our junior-high school student curators. We hope that, as they view this exhibition, our visitors will bear in mind such young people’s interests and feelings and their expectations for the way we see things.

Gallery 2 : Japan Kogei Association and Artisits of Kagawa

The Japan Kogei (arts and crafts) Association is devoted to the preservation and cultivation of intangible cultural properties and is made up mainly of individuals who work in the field of traditional arts and crafts and possess pertinent technical skills. Of central importance are individuals designated as holders of Important Intangible Culture Properties, or more familiarly known as Living National Treasures.
While stressing it, the association does not stick exclusively to the tradition but emphasizes creativity as well. Its Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition—held for the 65th time this year—is among the largest arts-and-crafts exhibits in Japan. The Lacquer Division of the association has held 36 Japan Traditional Urushi (Japanese lacquer) Exhibitions to date.
After the end of World War II, lacquerware artists in Kagawa Prefecture were active in a number of separate groups. In one of these groups called Kumikai, a major figure was Joshin Isoi (1883–1964), who was a designated Living National Treasure in the lacquer field known as kinma, characterized by incised patterns filled with colored lacquer. In 1956, Isoi succeeded to and helped develop the Shikoku Branch subdivision of the Japan Kogei Association, of which he was a founding director. Another Living National Treasure, in the field of carved lacquer (choshitsu), Kodo Otomaru (1898–1997) participated in the inauguration of this association and served as one of its directors. Indeed, many people from Kagawa Prefecture, like Masami Isoi (born in 1926) and Hitoshi Ota (born in 1931), both of whom have been active as directors, have participated in the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and in Japan Traditional Urushi Exhibition.
The present exhibit includes 28 works by lacquer artists who are active in the Japan Kogei Association and have exhibited in the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition and the Japan Traditional Urushi Exhibition.
