Entering Preschool

There are 56 preschools (29 city-run, 26 private, and one nationally run). Please inquire at individual preschools for information on applying to enter.
For information on the location of city-run preschools, contact the School Education Section (this information is also available on the City website).

Entering and Transferring Elementary and Junior High Schools

Based on the resident registry, notifications will be sent in early February to parents of children due to enter elementary and junior high school.
If your child is due to start school and you don't receive notification, please contact the School Education Section.


Transferring Schools

Citizens' Affairs Section, or any branch or field office

When moving in from outside of the city or within the city, the residence transfer notification with a name of a new school moving in will be issued at the Citizen's Division or any branch office. Submit documents (certificate of enrollment, certificate of providing textbooks) from the previous school as well as the residence transfer notification to the new school.

When moving out, obtain 1) documents (certificate of enrollment, certificate of providing textbooks) from the school, 2) the residence transfer notification at the Citizen's Division or any branch office then submit both 1 and 2 to the municipality you are moving into.

Afterschool Care

Lifelong Learning Section (10th Floor TEL (087)839-2633)

In homes where no one is there to take care of the children after school, children from grades 1 to 3 can join the afterschool program at their elementary school, where they will receive guidance on life skills.

Assistance Programs for Parents of Children in Preschool

There is funding available, including "Fee Assistance to Encourage Preschool Enrollment (Public and Private)," "Private Preschool Entrance Fee Assistance," and "Assistance for the third (or more) child in a family to go to preschool."

Elementary and junior high schools in the City have special support classes for children/students who require special assistance.
There is also a prefecturally-funded special assistance school. Contact the School Education Section for information about enrolment.
