Pregnant women who register their pregnancy at any hoken center, hoken station, citizens' consultation corner, branch office, or field office, will be given a Mother and Child Health Handbook.

Papa Mama Class, Childrearing Class

The following programs are held at the Takamatsu City Hoken Center:

Program Details
First-time Papa Mama Class A class for couples expecting their first child which includes practice and study about the role of the father and childrearing. 
Hagukumi (nurturing) Class A class for mothers of babies aged four to seven months. Group study about childrearing.
Dental care class for parents and children Small children and their guardians have a dental exam and consultation in order to help prevent cavities.

Other Programs

All hoken (health) centers and hoken stations provide health checks and consultations for pregnant women and babies.

"Hello Baby" Program

When a bay is born, a heath nurse or maternity nurse will visit every parent and baby at home and offer health consultation. Send a postcard of "Hello Baby " Program in the Maternal and Child Health Guidebook or fill out a birth slip at the counter when you notify the birth.

Enrolling Your Child in Daycare.

If all of the child's guardians including grandparents are unable to take care of the child for one of the following reasons, the child may be accepted into daycare:

  • Working during the day (Over four hours per day, four or more days per week).
  • Mother is pregnant, or has just had a baby (Up to four months after the birth).
  • Childcare is difficult due to illness or disability.
  • Guardian is taking care of a person living in the home who has a long-term illness or disability.
* There are 72 daycares (39 public, 33 private) in the city.

Care for Sick Children

Nurses or nursery staff will take care of sick or recovering children on behalf of parents in case of unavoidable situation such as job or some ceremonial occasions that parents cannot take care of them.

People in the area who "want to help with childrearing" and "want help with childrearing" can become members, and help each other out with occasional child minding on a paid volunteer basis.

We can help with the following:

  • Taking children to and from daycare and caring for them afterwards.
  • Taking care of children when a parent is sick or has to go to a ceremonial function.
  • Taking care of infants when it would be difficult to take them along (ie. to a hospital or open house day at school.)
  • Taking care of children when a parent is looking for work or doing work training.
  • Taking care of children when a parent needs a break (ie. going to a movie)
